Tranny difference between 81-83 an 84-85?

Hey guys whats the difference between these trannies(electrical wise)? I have an 83 that I'm moving everything over to my newly acquired 85 shell. I remember seeing an 84-85 tranny which has 2 sensors on it as supposed to 1 on my 83. Can someone tell me what these are and if I can use my 83 tranny and just tape up the other 2 wires that would normally plug into the 2nd sensor?

Thanks, Ed

84-85 trannies atleast on an SE has a 5th gear switch to send a signal to the ecu. I don't know about the 12a. As far as swapping goes just use the switch off of your old tranny. if there is an extra switch on the 84-85 don't hook it up.

Thanks Doc! My 83 tranny only had the back up switch on it which is the one thats going into the 85 shell.
While were on the subject of switches, the 1st gens did not come with a clutch switch right? From memory I thought only the 2nd gens had them. The reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out problem with my starter 12v switch not getting power when I move the key onto the start position.

Thanks, Ed

I know this isnt electrical, but the 81 and 82 cars at least have a slightly different trans mount.

Guys thanks for the response but I manage to find the problem. I exposed the ignition cylinder today and low and behold the black and red wire was not plugged in. Plugged it in and bam ignition switch to the starter is good so the motor should be in the new shell next week. Now I just have to figure out why my hazards dont work. LOL!

Thanks again, Ed
