Afraid I am fixing to get into something similar. I know someone who replaced the clutch, and had a pilot bearing fall apart as they were putting in the trans. After starting the engine, it started making a funny noise (that's when I was called). Dropped the trans, and discovered a needle from the pilot between the e-shaft and input shaft........
I fear the torrington bearing(s) are wasted. Hopefully, the front stat gear will be ok................

Rogue, not sure what you are trying to say, but if the front e-shaft bolt was not loosened, the torrington bearings, in the front, are fine. The pilot bearing is a roller bearing, totally different than a torrington.

Pilot bearings make a horrible noise, sometimes screeching, other times it sounds like sand being ground up.

He drove the car with the busted needle bearings between the front of the input shaft, and the rear of the recess in the e-shaft. Engine now makes a funny knock-like noise, even after putting the new pilot bearing in.
I am thinking the extra load against the torrington bearings has wiped them out...........

I have found e-shafts that have had 2, well, really 1-1/2 pilot bearings in them, due to a po not removing the first one. Your logic makes sense. The only ways I know for a knock to develope in a rotary is worn bearings causing the rotors to impact the housings and excessive endplay.

pilot bearing help

Clutch was making noises that got progressively worse and then started doing weird things like trying to engage when pedal was depressed and staying engaged when pedal depressed and coming to a stop. Dropped the trans and found clutch to be ok and throwout ok (but to be replaced...should put a better clutch but lack of $$$) The pilot was completly shelled with needle bearing ground up and metal everywhere. The outer race will NOT come out. the needles had taken over 1/3 of the 'lip' the puller can grab and after a few attempts (cheap-*** autozone rental pilot removal tool) the lip has been eliminated and the tool broke. now i have an outer race with no way to remove it from the e-shaft. any ideas?? chisel & hammer? dremel? i'm worried of marring the e-shaft. i'm stuck! this little tool would be good!
