Took out my first engine!

I just got through taking out the 12a engine in my 85 gsl. I'm so happy I could crap my pants! When all was said and done, it took me probably between 2-3 hours taking out motor and tranny at the same time, without the use of the shop manual I bought off of ebay and didnt use. Just me and one other mechanic friend, I think that's pretty bad ***!
I cant wait to start painting under my hood and then the rest of the car soon after.

Pointless thread really, but I'm pretty siked about all this. I'm only 16 with no experience other than body work, I'm pretty proud of myself.

What do you think would be a good color to paint my car? Or a color scheme for a first gen. I want to just paint the whole thing the blue from the rx8, but I think the first gens need some contrast to the color. I've considered racing stripe(s), two tone, finding some graphics. I just don't know what I want. Any good ideas?

I pulled my first engine out of my '87 TII. Thought it was pretty fun at first but now I got to pull it out of my '88 TII and its NOT FUN. Getting tired of all these wiring and bunch of nuts/bolts.

Got to pull the engine out of my '79 sometime too when I get the chance to work on it. Luckily, it will be a piece of cake. Got to love working on carb 12A's.

Good show. Keep your little parts and bits labeled or in pots for each area so you don't leave things out later.

Excellent job friend, the only way to learn is hands on. And like stated be carefull with the small parts, unlike those model cars we've all built if there is parts left over we cant pretend they must be extra and just chuck em.

I remember pulling my 12a. Lots of fun and extremely easy. So easy in fact, I've thought about putting together an engine just for racing and having just a stock engine and just swapping them before taking out to a race.

I use labeled ziplock baggies for my small parts.

I once pulled the engine from my REPU and installed it in my MG. Then I put it back in the REPU a week later.

good job, but want to hear something funny. At toyota where I work, I seen them pull a motor and trans in a 2004 sienna and put a different one in, took them 5 minutes LOL They install motors on line with trans and all in 62 seconds...

There isn't much to a 12A. IMO, almost anyone could probably figure out how to take a 12A out without a shop manual and basic mechanical skills. But I am the opposite of you. I have some experience with body work and a LOT of experience with mechanical parts for my age (I'm 18). I could easily take the engine out of my 82 GSL in an afternoon without the help of my haynes. Actually, there has been a lot of things that I did to my car without the haynes just because things are so simplified compared to other cars I have worked on (ie, 1988 Buick LeSabre, my first car). Hell, I know so much I think I'm smarter than the guys in the Canadian Tire auto shop.
