Timing Questions??

Ok, I cant find my manual so I'll need some help. Facing the engine with the timing mark left (red = trailing) and right (yellow = leading) and 0 degrees is where the pin is. I have the following questions...

Is the right of the pin advancing the timing and left of the pin retaring the timing?

How many degrees is the seperation between the red and yellow marks?

Where should I set the timing? I have stock carb, header, vacuum and mechanical advance is working.

For setting the timing, set the leading to the yellow mark by twisting the distributor and set the trailing to the red mark by adjusting the trailing vaccum advance diaphram. there are two screws to loosen on the diaphram and u push and pull it in or out of the distributor, if that makes any sense.

As for the degrees between the marks, I think its 23*, but I'm not totally sure. I believe you are correct with the advance and retard of the timing.

So both marks right at the pin?

Leading sets at 0* (TDC) and trailing at 20* ATDC. To set the timing to factory specs, just set it to where the marks are aligned with the pin.
As for which is advance and retard, towards the right (in your description) would be advance. Remember, the leading is at TDC, and the trailing is 20*ATDC, so that would mean moving the trailing closer to the first mark is advancing it, likewise, moving the leading further away from the second mark would also advance it.
Hope this all makes sense to you.

Yes, set each mark to the pin. But going by what Rogue_Wulff said, there is 20* between the two marks. Like I said, I wasn't sure.

Just want to make sure I understand.

0* is the pin TDC
to the right of the pin advance is ATDC
to the left of the pin is retard BTDC

thanks

Yes, the leading mark is at 0* TDC (+/- 1-2*, remember these were mass produced)
Moving towards the right, when facing the engine, would be advancing the timing (BTDC) and left would be retarding it (ATDC)

Also remember to set your timing with the vaccum's pulled off the distributor.
Set them to the marks and then when you hook the vac back up it will advance you as your giving it gas.

best way to not forget which way is advancing and which retarding is to remember that when facing the engine, the rotors move clockwise. It works for me at least.

Or remember when the motor starts to speed up that is advancing and vise versa.
