Timing over 4k RPM?
Timing over 4k RPM?
When setting the timing above 4K using which ever setting you like most (20-10 vs Yaws 24-16) Do you leave the vacuum advance hooked up or remove it. I have seen a thread or two that states both. Any clarification would be good.
Vacuum is highest at idle and your timing should be completely advanced by 4000 rpm, so it shouldn't matter if the hose is connected or not. I have not tried it, though. If you see a difference in timing at 4000 (between the hose connected or not), you would disconnect the hose as you want to set the timing at full advance.

Understand that aspect, let me be a little more specific. Once you have set the timing (i am assuming) that you leave everything hooked up ie vacuum advance lines. I then ponder why people are saying that setting timing to Paul Yaws specs is breaking their plugs. I put the light on the car at idle after set timing at 4K, and am very surprised to see how "retarded" the timing is compared to idle timing setting (especially trailing).

i like to know about the broken plugs also. i have mine set 24-16, but i don't have the vacuum advance hooked up. my plugs have 2500-3000 miles on them since doing this and i haven't had any problems yet.
if memory serves me correct, stock timing should be TDC and 20 ATDC at idle and the mechanical advance is 20 degrees. i don't know why your timing would be retarded at idle.
why retain the vac advance?
