Timing Issues...Need Suggestions
Timing Issues...Need Suggestions
Having some timing issues with my new streetported 12a... I can't get the timing to set at the marks. When set on the timing marks, engine will run if warmed up, but floods and will not start when cold. It also backfires a lot when set to the timing marks. If timing is set to 10-12 degrees advance at idle, (or 28 degrees advance @ 4000 rpm) it runs fine, )and the idle is somewhat rough (sounds about like a small block chevy with a roller cam).
engine was built by ISC racing, using 81-82 irons with a streetport slightly larger than the Racing Beat template; 84-85 rotors and e-shaft, rebalanced to use the 81-82 flywheel. Distributor is stock 12a, weber 40mm IDF carb, CarTech turbo.
Timing mark was lined up properly as was the distributor when it was installed,( has also been checked several times) and distributor was set so that the bolt marks on the flange made by the old engine lined up as a guide during initial installation. Engine fired up right away on initial start up, (this is the position where it seems to run best and starts eaisiest) but all attempts to set the timing at 0 degrees advance at idle result in backfiring and no cold start/flooding.
Is it possible the distributor is one tooth out??? will it run with the distributor one tooth out of alignment???
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks
