Question Timing 12A NA

hey guys.

Got a problem when i try to adjust the timing on my 12A, as the trailing timing is out a fair way.

I loosened the two screws on the vacuum as instructed in the Haynes manual, pushed and pulled it to see a change in the trailing timing mark but nothing happens? am i doing something wrong? do i have to disconnect the vacuum hose?

Make sure your idle speed is correct first. If you are still having problems, then try disconnecting and plugging the vac lines.

You are moving the timing light clamp to the T1 wire when checking/adjusting the trailing timing right? Also some timing lights dont work well with mazdas dual ignitions. Maybe not sheilded enough I dunno. One of my timing lights (Sunpro) will read leading timing no matter what wire I hook up to but my cheap walmart light works great. Its very frustrating and aggravating.

Okay, stupid question here;

You are using the front two plugs, right?
Lower is leading, upper is trailing, right?

Anyway, just wanted to check (hope you understand)... No other reason for this is coming to mind right now.

ha-ha yeah mate im using the correct ones, and there are no stupid questions here! i think if you have a look at most of my posts you would find ive asked most of them already.

I found the problem. It was interference to my timing light. i noticed when i attached the clip to the trailing lead and left my hand on the clip it worked? when i took my hand off the clip it would switch to the leading mark? so i just left my hand on it and adjusted the pot!

Funny thing is i did it by ear before i found the problem, and when i checked it with the light i was pretty much on the money haha.

Cheers for your help fellas.

Matt.
