TII swap into 1980 first gen help me

Is there anyone that could help me learn what exactly it takes to get a TII in my 80? Ive been reading all i can about it but noone seems to be talking about staying with a carb. Because i dont have an ecu or efi, is a blow though webber a good way to go? All im aiming for is starting out with a completely stock TII and having around 200 HP for me is perfect. I plan on keeping the same tranny and rear end. Ill definatly upgrade on the clutch though. If someone could work with me and have me understand what it takes and whats going on, i would appretiate it.

There was a post here recently about it. I forget who did it, but it looked rather nice, a little muchh work for a relative amount of HP as far as I can tell. But still cool Wont be cheap tho.

If you want to go with the stock 200hp and you will be happy with that then I would definetly go with the fuel injection. You will save yourself some serouis headaches and be much happier in the long run. IMO its going to be any harder to get a wire harness and an ecu than to find a custom manifold and carb setup. As far as tranny I would go with the TII tranny it is stronger. Also if your car doesnt have a LSD rear end I would rob one off a 1st gen that does. Preferable a 84 85 . It will make the car much easier to control with the added power. I have driven a TII first Gen conversion and plan to do the same to my 83. Its worth every bit of work. Hope this helps somewhat.

wow, im amazed with how many people replied so quickly. Ill check out that carbed turbo 12a thanks for the link. Also, why will i regret not going with FI? The j spec TII i wanna drop in comes with this blow through confuguration, because i dont have an ecu on my 80.

No Jspec engine came with a carb set-up all were EFI with differing levels of sophistication. These includes 12AT, 13BT, and 13B REW.

People have added turbos to both 12A and early 13B NA engines to get more power at relatively low cost. the normal approach is a blowthrough system which has the turbo in front of the carb. Draw through is also possible but there are technical difficulties, and real dramatic problems if you add an intercooler.

Starting from scratch retaining a carb is the quickest and cheapest solution, but you will be down some 5% compared with a well tuned EFI system. Changing NA to EFi is expensive and time consuming, remember many mods are required including a high power fuel pump and fuel lines. As a rough indication, double your budget.

Ive been finding good info lately, wich normally never happens, so now i know the truth. The TII with efi is great, but if your gonna drop it into a first gen thats not FI, go with a blow through carb set up. I still have alot to learn but hopfully soon ill do this. My 12a has been good to me, so ill probably run it until its dead before i go on with the TII swap.
