Take it out of gear

Nah man, I dont know...The only thing I can think of that would change when its on the ground is the wheels are on the ground, so unless the tranny is stuck engaged or something, and causing the wheels to put resistance on the engine and not let it turn over, I dont know... Sorry I couldnt be of more help...

PS - Welcome to the forum, Im sure someone here can help ya

It would help if you told us what year and model car you have, ditto for engine and tranny. I assume it's a manual also--right. Also any mods could be helpful--like the clutch, flywheel.

For a manual tranny in neutral, the driveshaft should be able to spin by hand. Basically anytime your foot is off the clutch, the clutch is engaged. I'd make sure you can put it in neutral first, and you can spin the driveshaft by hand when on jacks.

Need to know engine/tranny info to help you anymore.

Could also have something to do with your starter. Maybe it's weak and going out, Maybe the ground isn't real good. Make sure all the electrical connections are clean and tight.

I believe T2 engines are easier to crank over cause of the lower compression ratio. And yea, you should be able to turn the engine by hand.

I don't think you can use an n/a flywheel on a tII, the balance is different. What model is the starter for?

Mazdatrix is only listing one counterweight for the 86-88 13B, so a NA flywheel on TII should work fine I guess.

I had someone work on a VW and it did the same thing as you describe.

What happed was he left the bolts to the transmission loose and when the car was let down the transmission binded on the flywheel.

And Rotormotordriver has a good point; WIll it tunrn over on the ground by hand?

I've seen on the board several times that when you use an SE tranny with a T2 engine you need to use an aftermarket flywheel (for an SE) with a rear counterweight (for a T2). I'm also not sure how well the ring gear on the S4 flywheel will mate up with the SE starter--I know for a T2 it is in a slightly different position..

Maybe it can be done but something you will need to check out.
