Tie rods

I just noticed one of my outer tie rods rubber cup is shredded in half. Is this an item that can be replaced? Or should I just replace the whole rod? BTW, the bolt inside of the cup looks rusty and cruddy. Maybe I can clean it?

You can replace the boots. suspension.com has the Energy Suspension boots for $3/pr. If the boot was very recently shredded, and you know that the little ball joint in there isn't damaged, then you could pop the joint, remove the old boot, fill the new on with grease, gob grease all up in and the old joint, put the new boot in place, and re-assemble. If the tie rod is non-original, and has a grease fitting, you could hook up a grease gun, and run a whole lot of grease through the joint, after removing the boot, to get any contaminants out.

For most folks, though, unless you're getting under the car on a very regular basis and inspecting that sort of stuff, by the time the torn boot is noticed, the joint's shot.
