Throwing in the towel!!!

Well Im throwing in the towel on my 79 rx7, It is an inbetween nightmare, I can't keep it running, one day it will start, 4 days it won't. Im so tired of it. The PO screwed the carb or engine up really bad. It is an 81-82 engine in my 79 body with the 79 harness and electrical. I can get the car to start one day and if I don't let it warm up all the way and it dies, it usually will not start again, Sometimes I have to pump the pedal a whole bunch and all it does it pop and sputter. there are hoses that are not hooked up on the carb, vacuum units that have no hoses on them. I've checked for vacuum leaks and I can't find any. Usually I can start it when its warm but if the engine is cold forget it. Also I think the voltage regulator is going out as the fuse for the regulator is getting hot under my dash and my battery drains fast or is not charging correctly. I use my choke **** when I am trying to start the engine, but most of the time it will not start. I have checked spark, it is getting fuel. I just can't figure it out. Compression is good. Blah blah. Right now I am driving an 85 celica that I had to buy because the rx7 is a POS. I really liked the car but at this point its more trouble than its worth. Any ideas, Should I blow the car up. I paid $400 for it, Maybe thats the problem.

Sounds like you just need to remove the emissions stuff, Plug up the vacum ports, rebuild the carb and put in Electronic Ignition. Also swap over to a later Alt and get rid of the External regulatory.

I tried reading on how to remove the emmisions and I cannot locate the same hoses and devices that the pictures show on the faqs. I read both of them. I really need somebody local that can help me in wenatchee. I know a friend Justin but he is down south with the reserves helping with the rescues and cleanup.

And as always check and make sure the timing is set correctly. If your hearing poping while the engine is turning over chances are the timing is off.

The instructions are written for a 81+ car. the 79 is a bit different. If you want to make it easy, Just get a Weber and put everything else in the junk pile.

I've been there myself. There have been days where I was a afraid to drive it because it would mean me finding out something else was wrong with the damn thing. Personally, if I were you I would take a break from the car for a little while and come back to it when it doesn't have you seeing red. They're a fun car when they are running and it would suck to miss out on that if you don't have to.

I put the timing mark at TDC and pulled the distributor and re-aligned it. Afterwords I timed it and it was running fine. The next morning I went out to start it, it cranked a few times, started and I pushed in the choke before it was fully warmed up. After it died it would not start again. It was probly arout 60 degrees out.

had a feeling you'd be on that side of the country. I'm trying to decide to replace or fix the body of my '79.

The body is in perfect shape, no rust, needs paint and lots of interior work. Alot of work on the interior. Thats about it, If I could find one cheap it needs a new carb But I just don't have the money.
