Anybody got a picture of a 300zx (like the one above) next to an FB, rear view?

I keep thinking that 3rd brake light is the one to use. Looks clean, and doesn't affect the lines.

I don't think it's worth impersonating a police officer, or blinding everyone
every time you brake. LOL!

I mentioned that i wanted to put one on my 7 here on the forum and got flamed hard core but i think it looks pretty sweet and would keep my car from getting eaten by some rednecks lifted truck.

That's exactly what I am saying. Even regular cars and SUV's cant see our taillights at a stoplight. That's why I want it high mounted this time.

I think the only real question is at this point is how many holes to drill or is is possibly stuck on with 3m (unlikely).

I'd like to see what it would take because I don't have windshield washer provisions anymore and so if the light is stuck on with 3M somehow then the wires could easily be run through the hole left by the rear squirter.

If you'd accept a low location, you can do something similar to what I did - though I can't find a pic at the moment...

I made a rear running light in the location of the center spacer (between the tail lights) that spelled out "RX-7". It worked out pretty well, black plastic with LED's drilled in from the back to be close enough to show through only when they are energized.
This idea could be made with many LED's to become a big light bar between the tail lights. And even be set up as a running light and brake light (dual brightness) if you wanted to.

The problem is the lights being too low as it is, brighter might help a fraction but having a roof mounted 3rd keeps the light in the drivers line of sight even with today's monstrous SUVs and lifted trucks where their "dead ahead" is about the roofline of most first gens.
God only knows people hardly pay attention as it is while driving, we need all the help we can get, and sadly while unbolting the exhaust might be the easiest way to keep their attention it'll also land you deaf and in debt from tickets

This ebay seller has them in:
14 LED - Approx 6.5 inches
32 LED - Approx 11 inches
56 LED - Approx 18 inches

My only concern is that light might bleed back into the car,
as I don't see how these could keep light facing only the rear.

That's why I like these for a Mustang.
This is the look I want, and the size seems right.

Thumbs up

Good thread ya'll!

You know, for you guys with louvers, most of the lights like the vette light that mount to a surface could be hidden up under the top louver (like hanging upside down) and the you could tuck the wiring out of sight real easily if you wanted to avoid drilling any holes in your roof. And you wouldn't have to deal with any glare bouncing off the glass, so you could go as bright as you want. Just my $$ 0.02.

Is that what you wanted to see?
It's not the high mounted light - though the same method could be used to make one to mount up high.

That would be kool with a lighted Rotor Logo. And it really needs the horizontal lines of the stock piece.

I know that this thread is getting old, but this was the first place I checked before I added a third brake light to my 83. The early 90's Volkswagen Jetta's have an interior glass mount third brake light made by Hella which works and looks great in the first gen RX-7. The glass angle is near perfect and the light is about 12" long and maybe 1" tall. From the driver's seat is is thin enough that it can barely be seen in the rear view mirror and even at night it doesn't light up the interior of the car - despite being nearly as bright as led. I picked mine up in a junkyard for under $6 at the pull-a-part yard and only had to replace two miniature bulbs. As soon as it stops raining here I'll take some day and night pictures.

attached the metal clips to the window using leftover 3M adhesive from the weatherstrip.

light is wired and hanging; (2-3 amp fuse is all you need).

light ready to be attached to clips.

light is installed and hatch closed.

it works!

guess i need to buy some spare bulbs, but most of them are lit up.
