thinking about buying a fb

Hey guys. I found an 83 gsl for sale. It is owned by a friend of mine. I have no idea when the last time it was legally on the road but I know he has fired it up from time to time and drove it on the back roads near his house occasionally. It doesn't have a starter at the moment so I went over there today and coast started it. It suprisingly fired right up and ran decently.

I just don't really have any experience with the 12a. I have only owned TurboII FCs and a RX8, so I have no clue what I should be expecting as far as power and such goes. (I am not expecting a lot). Like I said, It fired up pretty quickly and held an idle at first around 2k, eventually dropping to around 1500. There was minimal surging and it seemed to run okay. I only took it to around 4k when I drove it. I was a little scared to go any further than that as it has old fuel and other fluids in it and it hasn't been started in a year and a half.

The kid wants $400 for it the way it sits. Im not looking for an awesome car, just something that will get me around and to drive in the winter. I will most likely do a bit of body work to it and probably a paint job. Also, where are common spots they rust out. I didn't jack it up just layed on the ground and poked around. There is surface rust pretty much everywhere and i managed to find one hole on the floor pan drivers side where you would have your feet. Im guessing there was a drain plug there that rotted out.

Any thoughts if this is a worth while venture or more things too look for before I buy?

Pull the bins behind the seats and see if the metal under those is rusted. If it is, run or buy it and part it out. When I say rusted, I mean rotted rusted. If the floor pans are shot, I am going to venture to say that the bin area is also shot. Other than that, not much more you can do than you haven't already done. If the bin areas appear to be ok, I would say buy it. (knowing TLC will have to put into it)

I am on my second fb, and I love them. -and I have driven/owned several other sports cars or cars that have been heavily modified in the past. For $400- it will be a fun daily driver.
