I think i heard that you can take the FC back seats and put them into a FB. This is what they might have done. Looks like a good deal....if the engine really is rebuilt.

he posted a 2nd ad with an email contact so i asked him if he has receipts for the engine and tranny work. i've have looked at $3000 rx7s which were decent, so im skeptical of a $1600 price.

Rear seats were offered on FB's. Rare option and it might have actually been a dealer installed thing only, but you could get them.

I have a friend who has a 1980 SA with factory rear seats. He told me it was a factory option, and yes they were a dealer installed option. His also has a sunroof that was the same kind of deal, factory option, but dealer installed. The rear seats are pretty useless though, unless you have no legs and only weight about 30 pounds. They're even smaller than the rear seats in my GXL.

In Japan, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens came with back seats. Since they were classified as a 4 seater coupe instead of a sports car, insurance was cheaper. Those seats do not have a 2nd gen fabric pattern. They may be JDM 1st gen seats or recovered 2nd gen seats. I have rear seats in my 2nd gen. I keep them folded down all the time, makes for a nice, large flat area for more useable cargo space.

To go back to stock, you need the metal bin frame, bins and the stock rear hatch carpet, along with sheetmetal screws to attach the bins, the metal strp that goes over carpet aft of the bins and the plastic plugs to hold the carpet down.

If you want bins, use parts from an FB, if you don't care about bins, use SA parts.

As a side note, I think there was also an aftermarket rear seat. You should have no troubling selling the seats as there have been many requests for them. I've had requests to purchase the 2nd gen rear seat sets that I have, not takers due to shipping costs. Never have test fitted them in a 1st gen, but it's supposedly do-able.

^^ haha yeah, i was about to say, they're only rare in the U.S. pretty common everywhere else, so basically, yes those seats are stock, but very useless. you can always get the bin containers from anotherone pretty cheap i suppose and replace your rear seats.

Not unless it is non US spec car, as I understand it, even the canadian cars had the strengthing ribs behind the seats of the 79-80 so a "factory rear seat" is a no go, none of the parts manuals for US or canada show them and I can't order parts for the ones i have.... (ones he has??? see below)

You may hate them that is your right but if you do hate them make sure you don't pitch them out there are plenty of people who will buy them original or aftermarket. Yes they are tiny but they do handle a car seat for kids rather well, which meant that I could run the 7 on long family trips.... why no officer I wasn't going 95mph afterall I have my kids in the car..... why yes insurance company my car is a four seater........

trochoid is almost 100% right

Rear seats were available in most markets except North America, my european spec 7 had them and I know the aussies got them. This particular set is the aftermarket ones, notice the high outside bolsters also note the filler piece on the outside it is actually vinyl covered cardboard not in the factory seats. The aftermarket ones are much taller and hard to deal with. Below is a picture of a real factory backseat that is in one of my JDM Savannas

I really dig the colour on that 7. What is it? That can't be Tornado Silver is it? Usually Tornado looks darker.

mine has the same rear seat in it, just gray.

I have the cardboard "arm rests" so mine would be an aftermarket addition?

If they were meant for 2 seats only, why did the japanese get "4"?

Its actually 2+2, by the way. And the only reason USA didn't get them is because of the safety regulations and crash tests at the time.

To quote from the 1985 book titled "The New Mazda RX-7 and Mazda Rotary Engine Sports Cars" (by Jack K. Yamaguchi) [a book about the new 2nd gen. 7]...
pgs. 34-35---"And yet, remarkably, it will be available as a 2+2, with small folding rear seats much like those of the Porshce 944. Actually, the previous RX-7 had also been offered in Japan as a 2+2, but stringent U.S. rear-end crash standards had precluded offering it there. The P747(2nd gen.) solves this problem belatedly by caging the rear compartment with sturdy side-frame extension."
So, would that make having a 2+2 model here illegal or non-inspectable? Not to mention very unsafe for any rear passengers in a crash...

Magnaflow SS.

I'm not sure if that is what that one is. BTW-they won't 'explode'. The packing, if not stainless steel, will burn up. I dunno, I can't say I have experience with it but I find it a bit hard to believe that the temps of rotary exhausts can be that hot to burn up fiberglass at the END of the tailpipe. Just my opinion, I think it is maybe a bit exaggerated, but I have no experience either way.
