Thermostat Replacement - Is it hard?

Just that, I am looking to replace my thermostat in an attempt to solve my mild overheating problem.

Is this a hard do it your selfe project?

Can I complete it in a morning or afternoon?

Thanks for the input

2 bolts
1 gasket

make sure you put it in right
refill radiator

5 min job

edit
on the water pump, the top flange that the top hose goes into has 2 bolts, just undo those and the stat is right there, you dont have to unhook the hose from the flange

5 min job IF the bolts aren't rusted and don't sheer off inside the water pump housing.

That's what happened to me and I had to drill it out and re-tap. The 5 min job ended up keeping my car off the road for a couple of days while I sorted things out.

With an Rx7, there is no 5 minute job, except for filling it with gas.

I have done both jobs (several times) and apart from the fact that I wasted a lot of not so cheap coolant, it's an easy job. Of course, it can happen that bolts are rusted badly, in that case it becomes a real serious job To prevent that in the future, you can always use special grease on the bolts.
I also do no longer use gaskets, just fluid-gasket, blue loctite. Works perfect, and is easear to remove then those paper things that stick to the metal as were they glued. Blue loctite is ment for these things, so no worries.

Agreed! I put anti-seize compound on just about every bolt that I reinstall. This is important for any bolt that could possibly get in contact with water.

(sorry for the threadjack)

I used the red high heat silicone on my carb spacer/gasket.... anyone forsee any problems with that?

And I too am looking to replace the thermostat, any Canadians have a suggestion as to where to get a good one? I don't really like the Canadian tire thermostats, they have a reputation for being.. well.. crappy. Should I just buy one from Mazda?!

Hey vipernicus42 I just picked up my Mazda Thermostat last night from the dealership. Their parts guy is great.

I ordered it friday, and it came in Monday

Its all Brass, very nice, and the concensous on the board is it sould only be the Mazda one because of the bypass valve that is operated by the thermostat.

I think it was like $20.00 CND if I remember right, I propably payed too much but thats ok because I am comfortable wiht what I bought

And I have no over head other then my car :P
