is there a way to test A/C components out of car

Hi, I have a 83 GS that i have been working on for over a year and shes with in weeks of starting up, when I got the car it had A/C but the belt was missing and i never put one on to test it because i was thinking of ditching it, but seeing how hot this summer is in Washington is making me regret not testing to see if the A/C works or not, so is there a way to test it out of the car as since i have taken it off last summer the engine bay has gone through many changes so i would like to know if its possible to test the compressor/pump and other components with out putting it on the car so that I don't waste my time if its broken, thanks

The only moving components in the AC is the compressor.

The dryer and the orifice should be replaced at this point. The rest of the lines should be cleared with
compressed air and pressure tested. I would get new rubber hoses as well. Have the condensor and
evaporator tested to make sure there are no leaks.

As to the compressor I have no idea how to test it not hooked up to a fully functioning system.
I would call around and see if a shop can look at it, but to be safe you may want to get a new one.
That old one sat unused for who knows how long and may have a lot of corrosion and gunk in it.
If you put it in and try it out it could seriously contaminate the rest of your minty clean and new
AC system parts that you would have to replace them again. I'm thinking the dryer and orifice could
get stuff in them if that old compressor lets fly with some bits of crud when you try to start it the first time.

ok thanks for the help, my main problem is my budget doesn't really have room right now for a whole new A/C system as I have already sunk every cent i could into the car, so idk i might go have everything tested and just hook up all the old stuff I have and hope it works, and if it doesn't ill start saving for a fully new system

A/c is a luxury, not a necessity, save some $$ and get her done right

yeah i know that's why i'm just going to try and get the system i have to work if i cant ill just wait until next summer to buy a new one, the car itself is just about ready for the road, need to check my wiring, add fluids, all that sort of small stuff, i'm hoping she will start on the first try though its very unlikely
