splitter is a tray under the airdam, creates a vacuum and keeps the front end glued to the road, it usually protrudes forward of the airdam creating the air splitter, this is what creates most downforce on the front airdam. The "airdam" is just that damming the air flow, reducing the amount of air forced under the car and lifting the front end at speed.

Yes it does, you have to complettly remove the factory bumper down to the bumper shocks, then install the bumper support that comes witht the mariah mode 4 bumper... the attach the bumber......
Once installed it looks like the original bumber with the air dam. but the whole unit is fiberglass... the original bumber is gone...

side splitters. is this the usual black/carbon fibre flat piece on the corners of the air dams, usually with some type of collapsable spring or something holding them on?

No really I think you are talking about winglets, they do a similar job by directing the air falling off the airdam to move up, pushing down on the winglets, thereby causing additional downforce. This originally ame out of F1 and has been used by many cars that lacked downforce in racing since.

Any airdam that looks like the red one above will make a difference on the track.... As long as it has the "pan" from the main opening to the car... I definitely noticed a difference at speed with one mounted on the front of my car. The other nice thing is that instead of using the side buckets for foglights, you can cut them open, and run cooling vents to your front brakes... HUGE help on a first gen (less cracked rotors)

Airflow is my life
It also needs to be rigid enough so as not to flex under load. The bigger the splitter, the more load will be on it. It should generate downforce at the front and pull the car closer to the ground.
