Are there any good cars left?

My first car in HS was a 1981 RX-7. I loved that car. I shipped it to Germany after college and it was totaled. The engine lived on in a beautiful 1983 GSL that I regrettably sold prior to buying a 1998 Turbo II. From 1992 until 2001 I owned ~9 RX-7s, I used to rebuild rotary engines on my kitchen table. From 2001 until now I've not even thought about RX-7s until now.

For months I've been looking for a good first gen or second gen, prefer 1st of course, a GSL (I like 4 wheel discs) but I just can't seem to find any good ones. The cars that run are way too expensive or have been modified in some way (poorly done) and the ones that don't run any more just seem to be beyond hope.

I guess I was spoiled 10 years ago when I could find more RX's than I could work on. Is there hope? Are there still some good 1st gens out there, I only want 100% stock.

I'm new to the forum but not new to RX's... so go easy on me.

Well, depends on where exactly you live. If you live here in the States, craigslist, eBay Motors, AutoTrader, and here on the Forum in the For Sale/Want to Buy section are your best bets.

Heck, go with a GSL-SE since you like 4 wheel discs. Unless you're afraid of EFI.

Definitely not opposed to a GSL-SE. I've never actually had one, I always ended up with GS and GSL models. I imagine the SE model is great, I'd be leery about buying a not running FI car though, you never know what kind of shape the electronics are in. I guess it's worth a gamble though if the right chassis comes along. I'm really looking for the nice condition, all stock with a blown engine deals out there.

I bought my '85 -SE for $1500. Came with about 140,000 miles on it. I now have 200,500 miles on it and it runs superb. The body has a few little scratches and nicks around the body, but I love the car. And, believe it or not, but the only "electronics" failure on it is my rear wiper motor. And, the Sub-Zero Start Assist but I chucked that thing, anyways.

Awesome.. I can't tell you how many amazing deals I passed on years ago. People used to want to give me their cars, now I can't find them! I guess karma caught up with me.

Nice find on the SE. Thanks for giving me hope, I'll just keep my eyes open for something good out there.

They are now old enough to be called classics (25+) and the prices should start appreciating well in the next decade for mint FB's.

Rust never sleeps....

There are some mint ones. You have to search craigslist, autotrader, ebay motors and the sales forums here of course.

If you have the cash you can find one. Expect to pay 4-8 grand for excellent condition in all areas.

So GSL-SE's are on the upswing eh? I see quite a few between $3-4k that are in sound running condition. I guess that's still a pretty good deal then. Again, I've never owned a GSL-SE but I thinking the best model at the end of an era might be the way to go. Thanks for the advice.

If anyone else has advice on 83-85 GSL or 84-85 GSL-SE pricing please let me know.

Thanks

Yea it's not that it's the best it's all a matter of condition and tastes. Like this one I saw yesterday. It's so sweet... as an example of a mint vehicle just from looking at the ad.http://dallas.craigslist.org/car/521274506.html

Very nice! . I can't believe that's original! Seems too good to be true. Too bad it's not an 81-83 though as I've never fancied the 79-80 models. If I remember correctly they have that funky air injection system and what not. Still worth a look though, thanks for posting it.

Yeah there has got to be a some nice ones left! Mazda made a **** ton of 1st gens. But if it were me and i was to do it all over again; i would hold out for one that somebody already put some work into. Like a TII swap and fresh paint, just my 2 cents

Take a look:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ight=excellent

It's my best car, overall. Lowest mileage, best interior, most preventative maintenance.
