Testing Fuel Pressure

Does it work to test fuel pressure while cranking an engine, with the fuel line terminating into the tester? or does the engine have to be running/ does the tester have to be tee'd into the fuel line.

If not I am getting 3-4 psi before the regulartor and suspect a broken fuel pump.

Gauge shoud be teed and not deadheaded as the stock system is a bypass system. Deadheading the fuel at the gauge will give the max output reading of the pump, if that's what your goal is.

83 and earlier, turning the key on should start the pump. 84-5, crank.

That's fine for an FI SE, but that pressure will blow the gaskets in his carb and collapse the floats.
