OR Temp gauge

So my temp gauge does not work. Hasn't since i owned the car, I just change the thermostat and fluids every year, it is now starting to bother me since the car is about to hit 300k. I have pulled the gauge cluster out and hooked it right to the batter and the needle moves, The senor is also new so I am thinking that there is a break in the wire somewhere. Instead of pulling the wiring harness apart (since its my daily driver and all) can i splice a wire from the plug (the the back of the cluster) that controls the gauge and to the sensor? Will that work or does it have to be ran through something else also?

Has anyone done this?

Thanks for input.

I'd be making sure the wire works through the engine connector inside the engine bay. (big black plug) under the brake master cylinder. They love to get corroded. Sometimes just Plugging and unplugging them will fix the issue. If not you'll have to de pin the wire and shine it up.
