Tell Me About The First Gen...

I have a nicely modded FC, but I need a daily driver. I would like a Miata, but a FB/SA would be cool too. GSL-SE is out, as if I get another rex, I want something different, so carbed is the way to go. What do I look for in a FB? How much should I look to spend on a decent FB? Any words of wisdom? I assume normal rotary rules apply: compression check, coolant system check, high mileage a no-no on original engine, etc. Thanks guys!!

you can find a nice one for about 1500 usually. id say look around til you find one thats got a few mods because you can sometimes get lucky and get em with the car for free.

Well, I want stock, if possible. Like I said, my FC is my fast/project car. I want something reliable (then why go rotary again right?) so mods are out of the question. What models came with what options? My FC has power everything, and I hate it.

Like I said....so GSL-SE. I actually WANT carb. And the FC will be the beast (eventual 20B swap hopefully) and the FB as a daily. Basically, waht are the problems associated with the 1st gen?

A stock GSL-SE is Fuel Injected. It is probably one of THE Most ROCK SOLID RELIABLE N/A Rotaries ever.

Only problem few seem to have is the leaking injectors.

There is a thread here on Engine Miles, and many have gone over 200k.

Mine has 166K on it's original engine. - 100% STOCK.

Don't worry about high mileage on a 1st-gen. People have gone well over 300,000mi on the original 12A.

Why do you assume mods = unreliability. With n/a rotories this definately isn't the case. My 1st gen. is heavily moddified and you couldn't ask for a more reliable car.

i hear what your saying, but,,,,if you took a drive in an
GSL-SE, then drove a 12a car, that would help you to
make up your mind about 1st gens,,say you buy a 12a
rx7,,trust me,,down the road your gonna want that
extra 34 hp , and its in the SE. i'm a 82 GS bought for
$ 1.200 bucks,, after buying it i learned about the SE's
i would still like a nice 85 SE,,,i hate power everything too..

Never seen one myself. I had an unstock one, and with a cat-back, a K&N, and a few little things, I would stomp the living **** out of a stock -SE, even with my AOD.
