Teflon Tape

I have some of that teflon tape that you use on plumbing and such in the house. It's nice for sealing the threads. I was wondering if it's be good on the car.

When I used to work at the shop, I used it a lot on boingers. Anything that threaded in, oil pressure senders, temperature senders, etc. Basically anything that screwed into the radiator or the engine that had access to fluid passages.

Is it good to use this tape? Will it stand up to rotary heat? How close to teh end of the threads should I get it? I was cautioned that it does get cut up into ribbons while meshing the threads.

i use it alot on fittings and stuff, it can take a good amount of heat just make sure it is in full pieces not all cut up when you put it on. either that or use plumbers putty that hardens. that stuff good.

Don't use it on fittings for fuel pumps or anything fuel related as it will brake down and can damage pumps, gauges and regulators. It will also usually void any warranties on these parts. Use Loctite.

dont use teplon tape. instead, use the teplon paste which is made by loctite. sold in tubes. basically, just like any pipe sealant, dont put any on the first 3 threads of the pipe as it may get into and clogged the lines.

For heat resistance, I put teflon tape on a 30 year old propane torch because a little flame kept forming at the base of the threaded part of the fitting (no, not at the tank fitting.. kaboom! :p). It handles the heat quite well.
