Targa bands?
I like the targa bands, myself.
Other than the obvious "can't get under it to clean or wax" problem, that is.
There were at least two different styles, a one-piece unit that used factory emblems on the side, (like on my '80) and a three-piece unit that said something like "Targa-7" on the sides. Anybody know how to take one of these things off?
I'm assuming that the headliner needs to be dropped in the rear to gain access to the nuts, but I'd appreciate any input. Thanks! -WG

Something is only worth what somebody else is will to pay for it. With that said lets move on.
I have bought/sold many of the targa band online and thru eBay over the years.
There are 2 different targa band that were sold, if the side panels say "mazda" then you have the dealer/factory units. If it says "targa 7 " then you have the clone version. The "mazda" band seems to more OEM thru you get more $$$ for it.
But the value is based upon the condition of the unit, I usually rate mine on a scale from 1 to 10, then discredit for cracks, chips, loose parts.
I have seen new/old stock units go for a $400 and lower "targa 7" with flaws going for as little as $50.
These are hard items to ship, to box and pad it for the abuse the shipper WILL do to this rare and unique piece.

I sold my three piece Targa Band on Ebay for $120, not bad since I only paid $150 for my car! Anyway, my targa came off an '83 GSL, and was held on by sheet metal screws only, no nuts.

Yeah, sheet metal screws. That's why patching ugly holes is next on my to-do list on my project car.
I'm selling the 3pc Mazda band I got off my parts heap to Vohaul this month. Got any tips on shipping, rhinor61?

Okay, so the 3-piece units attach with sheet-matal screws, what about the one-piece unit like I have?
I'm going to need to remove it this spring when I paint the car. Anybody know about those? Thanks for the replies so far, I appreciate the info! -WG

one-piece targa band
Here's a picture. I kind of doubt that it's attached with double-sided tape as the thing has lasted for over 20 years, but if it is, that would definitely make it easier to remove. -WG

I think targa bands look best on targa cars, like the 80's Porsche 911 targa... of course I prefer the hardtop on that car anyhow so my opinion is skewed.
That 1 piece does look better. It's most likely affixed with trim adhesive, the kind used to glue on side moulding.

As I understand it, a targa BAR is what the Porsches have, and serves as a support for the removable top section, whereas a targa BAND is a purely cosmetic treatment which mimics the styling of the targa bar.
Dated? Yes, but then so is the SA/FB.
...And the Porsche 911T.
I like a Porsche with a nice swing on it, myself.
