Tail light lenses, sealant question.

In regards to this archived thread: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/body-removing-tail-light-assembly-531280/

I was wondering if anybody had any ideas for a sealant to use for the outer lenses on the S2-S3 tail lights. I won't be reinstalling the rubber protector strips that go on last because I ripped mine (dry rot) and they cost $60 from Black dragon new. I used some silicone exterior caulk but doesn't seem to be doing the trick, and I need not mention how long it took for that **** to dry!
So I need something quick drying that is not permanant.
Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks!
Jae

FWIW I replaced my rear seals with new ones (too complex for just caulking on SAs IMHO). However, I did layer a thin bead of axle grease (no ****, works!!) on both sides of the gasket so easy removal anytime, and grease helps it seal against the elements nicely...

I just replaced mine with OEM seals. The grease idea works good, tho I used silicon grease for mine. I think a guy could fashion a pretty good seal from some kind of off-the-shelf weatherstrip bead from Home Depot. Might have to stick it to the lense part with something that's not TOO sticky.

1. This is a FB
2. The gasket is already on there
3. My question was about the outer lense, you know, the clear one... there isn't a gasket between the colored lense and the clear one. Need a recommendation on what to use to hold it to the colored part of the lense. This needs to be water tight because dirt and **** gets in there and I don't want to have to clean it every time I wash the car.

An exterior clear silicone caulk would be the best, imho. And yes, it will need time to set up. It will also be more than semi-permanent. Sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and spend the money on the correct parts. You will get a better fit and finish in the long run.

GM has a black rope caulk for fixing tail light lenses to the light body, I bought some for my Trofeo when I replaced the tail light lense. This stuff is semi-permanent and should work. It takes a heat gun to remove the lense once the unit is assembled. Check your local GM/Olds parts dept. and ask for the caulk. Mine was for a 90 Toronado Trofeo. There is enough in a package to do more than 4 tail lights.

You can use this caulk as a seal between the tail light unit and body when you mount them, should seal nicely if your foam gaskets are toast.

I use Seal All. It works great anytime I've used it. If you need to remove it just heat it up and pull apart

Ah yes, that sounds like it would work awesome.
I didn't actually remove the whole tail light assembly, just the outer lense and protector strips because the driver side light was getting dirty inside.
Thanks for the help guys!
