tach on crack + noisy ignitor

My tachometer is on the fritz, indicating 4500rpm idle and pegged at redline while driving. When the turn signal is activated, the needle dances. Additionally, the alt, coolant, and oil light stay on.
I also noticed one of the ignitors (pretty sure it an ignitor) on the drivers side on the engine bay (near the wheel well) making some racket.
Would a bad ignitor cause this? Im not sure if it is worn points, dead ignitor(s), or a bad alternator.
This is a stock 1979...

A stock 79 had points, therefore, no ignitors as they are for electronic ignition.
The tach doubles as a voltmeter. The sysmptoms you describe are indicitive of a bad alt or regulator, seperate units on the 79, combined from 80 up.
