put a timing light on a lead plug wire and see if its getting a spark. if not then your lead igniter is deceased. not the problem, then get a bucket and unhook the fuel line and turn the pump on. if gas comes out you're good there. this means carb or compression problems. since yours is an 84 the tach should be reading off the trailing coil. odd that it wouldn't see anything unless you lost power to both coils or fried both igniters. i'm going to stick with igniters here since your tach didn't move.

If it fired up for a sec on the starter fluid, I would think it's your fuel delivery - mayby the pump or a clogged line. IMO, It only makes sense if it fired at all, you're getting spark.

I can't remember if you said that you checked the fuel filter. If you haven't then that's where I would look too. (Also make sure one one else installed a 2nd fuel filter some where else on the gas line.)

BUT...

jeremy, is right on with the tach/igniter deal.

i figured that maybe just his trailing was firing. some won't start on the trailing and some will. my 79 wouldn't. the starting fluid might be enough to get it moving though. after rereading it i'm thinking fuel delivery too. really odd sequence of things though.
