Unless the seal(s) are really broke across the rotor they will start and actually have decent hp, depending on the damage done....You will usually get a lumpy idle and and you can watch the tach blip, so to speak.... You can use a simple PSI gause in the spark plug hole and turn the car over and watch each rotation for inconsistant readings.....EX: 70-40-40 which would show that 2 chambers are low due to the one broken seal etc.

Of course I'm sure your know all this, but incase your new I hope this helps

when my dad's went.. (87 n/a) he drove it home fine.. when he went to drive me somewhere a couple hours later.. it wouldnt start. we were looking aorund.. and the cat was BRIGHT *** red. he took out a spark plug and told me to crank it over.. one compression.. 2 were really low (just by feeling) and that was it.. took it out.. tore it down.. and sure enough.. it was broken

Well. if you tell us how a bitch smokes, we could possibly form an analogy for you.

I've had a blown rear apex seal. Basically, the engine was very hard to start and once it finally got going, it would spit and sputter and rock the car as if it were in an earthquake. The gas consumption went way up and the power I once had will go way down.

New guy and his 1982 RX-7 stock

Hi all this is my first day on the boards. to explain the prob. my car has had a little backfire for a couple weeks now, not to sure how long, didnt really mind just figured it was a quark and my car performed great despite that. well now it will be about 2 weeks ago my car started backfiring really bad on deceleration after a mild rev and when i would engine brake it turned into a more constant pop. i also noticed that my power was gone it runs like a dog =( my idle is crap as well ive checked all the plugs and wires for contact and i jsut changed my fuel filter. i found that i had a broke silenoid vaccume controller thingy so im in the process of fixing that its the 2nd one from the left as you look at it from driver side. when i plug the vaccume side it smoothes out but still idle hard at about 500-700 rpm so i adjusted the idle up to 1100 where it was smoother and adjusted the A/F screw. but still CRAP its really pissing me off casue i dont know anything about these cars but i love mine to death.
