symptoms of aged coil

Anyone knows what symptoms of aged coils? The reason I ask is because after the car has been sitting for a day or two, the car makes a funny noise when I try to start it. It sounds like the starter is not engaging and all of the sudden it starts. Once the engine is warmed and restarting will not duplicate the problem. I just replaced the stock starter and the battery cables as well as the battery. Any thoughts will be appreciated. By the way, the car is bone stock85 se with 73,000 except the RB streetport exhaust.

Check the coils with an OHM meter. The specs are in the shop manual, Haynes, Chiltons. What kind of funny noise?

It sounded like a grinding noise when attempted to cold start. I had this problem in the past and decided to change the battery, cables as well as the starter. Once all that was done, the cold starting(grinding) noise was gone until recently. The strange thing was that the stock starter would tested normal on the bench.

Hmmm, the starting problems I've had were attributed to loose or corroded connections at the starter or a bad starter which you've looked at.

You can check your leading coil and leading wires and make sure they are up to snuff.

I'm assuming the ringgear on your flywheel is also in check but I'm not sure that's the problem since you don't have the problem when it's warm.

The starter grinding is common, especially with rebuilt ones. Take it back and exchange it. Took my 3rd try to get a decent one.

I will take the starter back if it gets worse. A big thanks to all that replied.

My starter does that grinding thing to, especially when it is cold. Luckily I have a lifetime warranty.
