switch light

The little light above the ignition switch in my 84 gsl will come when either door is opened but it won't ever go off unless I unhook the battery. I'm not sure what makes it go off, any ideas? Thanks

Do you mean the one in the door jam? Or is there one connected to the handle?

That light is controlled by a timer circuit in the "CPU". I would guess you have a problem with the CPU. It is located above and slightly behind the fuse block. Maybe you can find a working used one from someone on the list. See page 15-12 in the FSM and section H in the wiring diagram.

Does any one have a picture of the cpu I'm looking for? I've been under the dash and not sure what I'm looking for, I know it's got to be starring me in the face I don't know this is so hard lol. Thanks

Pull the carpet back on the passenger side footwell. The ECU is located there, and is nothing more than an H-bracket with a sealed aluminum tub with a shiny cover. The ECU controls a lot of simple things on these cars, and the delay timer is correct.

How long are you watching that ignition key light? It normally takes mine about 30s+ to go out after closing the car door, open and closing the garage door and then hiding in the dark so the car doesn't know I'm watching.

Does your ignition key light cause your battery to be dead in the morning? Are you feeling overly paranoid about that light inside the refrigerator, too? (* it goes out when you're not looking, as well!)

Well I don't drive it every day, and it's a new battery so it didn't kill it but until I found out it want going off it had sat I my back yard with that light on for a week...I figure that's too long.
Yeah I knew the ecu was under the passenger foot well, but as stated above and looking at the wiring manual, supposedly there's a cpu somewhere behind the fuse box under the dr.side dash which I can't seem to find.

If you look in the FSM wiring diagram (links are in the archive of the first gen forum here) you'll find the location and plug for the CPU. It'll also show you where it is based on the plug and you should be able to find it easily with those 3 pieces of information. Ya gotta learn wiring sometime with these old cars! I just spend a few hours today doing so and I've wired a TII ECU into one of mine. Always learning, that's my mindset with these cars...
