Exclamation Swapping axles out????

So im in search of a new axle because my right axle hat got bent.........i was going to buy another axle but was told i can use my old GS axle in my GSL rear because i can switch over the ends so that it will work............

"all 84-85 non se axles are the same.
the bearings are pressed in and that keeps the backing plates on there.
just take both axles to a machine shop and tell them what you want done."

is this true or would it be easier to just keep looking for a GSL axle somebody wants to get rid of??

Either they are retards or the GSL rear in your car is a 81-83 small axle version. All S/GS/GSL axles of the same year ranges are the same, so if its not working its from the wrong year.

ok so i went up to the shop and it appears they arent stupid.........

what i saw was the the axle they pulled and the axle i gave them out of my GS rear were acully different... the one from my supposed 85' GSL rear was a smaller axle type with ( i think ) 24 splines and was the same diameter size all the way up untill the splined part.......my 85' GS axle was a 27 spline and was really fat at the base then half way up the shaft it came into a smaller diameter.....??????

now....i dont know how this happened since both my rears were supposed to be 85's and when installed everything lined up and drive shafts bolted up fine........

regardless i told them to put my bent axle back on the car so i can get it home and i can research and do it myself........what the f!!!

That sucks man, but finding an axle from a junkyard shouldn't be all that difficult.... At least this way, you can keep the other rear end in one piece rather than parting it out for the axles...

Assuming that a previous owner of the GSL rear didn't switch things around it is a 83 rear end. 83's have the bigger driveshaft pinion flange but still use the small axles.

well then thats probaly the case...because the driveshaft still worked even though it was a 85' but the axles are the small ones....i wish there was a way to use my large ones i have...

hey midwest get back to me on one of the small ones you got.......do any of them perhaps have the backing plates and new/somewhat new bearings already on??
