Suspension- Advice...

Ok, i need some advice. Im sick of all the Rattling comming from the back of my car. I believe it is caused by the stiff suspension. I am a little confused about the whole suspension thing.. Now a few questions, RacingBeat sells Coil Springs, can i just buy the rear now, and get the fronts later? Also, are the Coil Springs from RacingBeat going to give me a smoother ride or stiffer? What do i need to smoothen out my ride? Should i go for rear struts and spirngs?? ....... I have never installed struts or springs, how hard is it? Do i need any 'special' tools? Thanks much. If you get the coils, get the tokito struts. They are great, I dont have them now, but his spring I have plans for them.

As for difficuly, it depends on what you are capable of doing. It is very dangerous compressing the springs if you dont know what you are doing.

I have a friend whose neigher got killes becasue of it.

I reccomend going to a shop for that.

What is the history of your "noise"? Do you have "stock parts now? Are you sure the "noise" is the suspension?? I have a full set of the Tokico Illuminas (4) available but was hoping to sell them locally.

My first suspect for the rattle would be the exhaust or heat shields.
Is your suspension stock? If so, stock replacement shocks/struts would help clean up thde ride (read dampen). any aftermarket piece will stiffen it up.

The front struts can be tricky. It's been discussed 6.02x10^23 times. Do a search. I'd advise against replacing the rear only. It would likely cause oversteering problems.

Just doing the rears with something stiffer than stock will increase understeer.

I'm confused with what the goal is. Do you want a softer ride? Anything performance oriented or even stock will tend to ride stiffer than a well used (re. old) suspension. I'm sure there are some springs and struts/shocks available that actually soften the ride from stock but I've never seen it, nor would I want it, personally.

Softening the ride isn't likely to fix your rattling problem anyway. If something rattles going over bumps on a stiff suspension, you're bound to hit the same frequencies with a moderately softened system also.

Having said all that, NEVER change the suspension settings on only half of a car, any car, without knowing exactly what you are doing. Spring and shock systems are developed for all four corners at once to provide the best, safest suspension setup. Just changing the settings on half a car gan greatly upset the handling and can lead to very dangerous handling traits.

I would suggest that you fix the rattle at the source and upgrade the suspension to further improve exploit the great handling these cars offer.

Can you make what ever is rattling "rattle" by pushing on the car or something? I've found this to be the best method for finding those annoying noises.

The noise is mainly going over bumps.. I figured that if i swithced to a sfter suspension, that the noise would no longer occur. I guess i could just with a full suspension, But i do not want to go with a stiffer set-up.. Any ideas on a softer suspension?

I would agree that you should first find the source of your rattle, if that is what you want to "fix". It may not be suspension related. I see from your mod list that you have done exhaust work. I have seen mufflers rattle, or thier mounts, or tooo close clearence to the body. I was also going to suggest looking at the "jack" for possible noise, but I see you have removed it .....
How many miles on the car??? I would find it very hard to believe that your original stock suspension is too "stiff" at this piont. It is more likely that your shocks are too worn and are letting the road get through. Your original springs ARE softer by now because of age. Maybe you just need some new, "but not performance", shocks and struts??
