surge tank question
surge tank question
Can someone please explain why this is needed on a EFI system ?
Also, here is a pic of someone's setup. Can someone please try and label up for me, thanks

I've been doing research on swapping to TII engine/trans. from what I've read so far, the FB fuel tank doesnt have good baffles. So you set up this contraption (surge tank) to feel fuel pressure and prevent fuel starvation. As the gas sloshes in the tank, it could cavitate the pump, meaning drop a in pressure/fuel.
One fuel pump, fills the surge tank, and its OK if it surges a lil, its just filling up the tank. The second fuel pump pumps from the surge tank to the engine.
Anyone else feel free to chime in and correct me if I'm wrong or missing information.

here is a good thread from not too long ago......... https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=surge+tank
The FI engines have a cup in the fuel tank that both the pickup and return lines sit. This is to help prevent fuel starvation and detonation, particularly on turbo engines. The SE tanks have a small cup, the 2nd gen cup holds about 4 times more volume than the SEs.
A surge tank is simply a work around for the lack of these cups.

can you guys imagine what the noise is going to be like ?
i am already struggling with one pump mounted externally
in the pic above the guy has 3 pumps mounted in the boot !

The surge tank thing is very popular with Australian 1st Gen Turbos, but
then again - none of those came with a fuel injected 13B or baffled fuel tank.
For additional reference:
I am currently running about 500RWHP with a stock GSL-SE tank and pickup.
I plan to increase HP significantly more too - hopefully I will not need to re-do the fuel system.
