suggestions and ideas for my project

Here's the deal. I'm a poor college studen in search for an inexpensive project car. So far the first gen (12a's) seem ideal for my situation. I can find a non runner in my area for under $500 in my area and they are rather unique (ie, rotary power) which is a definate plus. I've done a bit a research and I'd really like to stay n/a. As a side note this car won't be a daily driver but will be driven from time to time on the street. Here is what I have so far:

12A w/ ild bridge port
full exhaust
FI for streetability

The questions I currently have are as follows:

Can a bridgey be made quiet enough not to set off the cops everytime I drive by w/o sacrificing too much power?

What are my options as far as FI for the 12A? I've heard that a twin 40mm twm setup would be great for street apps (even for a bridgey).
--------------------------

My goal would be 200hp at the wheels eventually. I know that this sounds like a rather expensive project despite my current lack of funds, but this is a project that will probably take place over a couple of years. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Sounds like fun to me! Get a light weight flywheel and some deep gears for the rear and it will be a blast.

I'd try to find a "S" model so it would be the lightest.
If I didn't have a turbo FB project going I think I would do the same thing but with a 13b and a set of 9.7 rotors.

setzep, I'd definately go with a taller gear ratio. You talking about a 6port or 4port 13b?

Is anyone out there running FI on there n/a 12a?

Maybe a T2 engine with the 9.7 rotors (4 port).

Technically you want a shorter ratio.

Setzep gave me an idea with the TII engine thing

shorter, taller, higher, you know what I mean.

How much extra money would have to be shelled out to go with TII housings and 9.7 rotors (89+ n/a's had these correct?)? I've also considered possibly going to a TII tranny eventually.

You'd need all the TII housings, cause pre 86 and post 85 ones don't interchange.

Will everything just bolt right in or will I have to have anything fabricated? If I get a running project car it would be beneficial to pull a motor from a junkyard car so that I can still drive mine.

Also can you point me to anyone that's gone with one of the twm FI setups?

You guys are great help, BTW.

You could get a TII engine, put the 9.7 rotating assembly in it, use a 12A front cover, 12A metering oil pump to the TII oil injectors in the rotor housings (unless you want to eliminate that stuff and premix), the RB 12A->13B mount brace, RB fuel injector plugs, and an old 4 port Weber intake for the TWM throttle bodies.

Somewhere on here there is a pic posted of a TWM setup with fuel rails and stuff, but I don't know who it belongs to.

i was just about to mention this!

man, start simple and take a sequential approach to this thing. i know it's hard to control the fervor, but trust me on this, before you know it, you can blow 5, 6, 7 G's easily and still have a car that can't get out of it's own way!

you said you want a bridge ... okay ... start there. get the car. clean it up a little. make it roadworthy in stock form, then pull the motor (or buy an extra one) and have it built for reliability first, then power. do your exhaust, and run a decent carbie while you save for the EFI system.

between hardware and software, you could be looking at anywhere from 3000-5000 bucks for a good system. then there's installation pains and tuning pains ... and if you plan to do work on it for yourself, remember you're in school so where's the time coming from.

so just pencil everything out ... and stick to your guns! i don't want to make it seem like i'm trying to **** on your plans, but i'm speaking from experience and i think it would be a shame if i didn't at least tell you what you're up against.

Mike and diabolical, I totally understand your points and I plan on doing exactly as you said. I will definately start off slow. Like I said, this is a project that will probably take me a couple of years to complete due to time and money. Most of the work probably will be done when I'm out of school and have a job (less than a year). I'm just trying to get a head start and learn as much as I can so I don't end up changing my mind a lot and wasting even more money. I also figured that I could do a good bit of the work myself to save money where possible. I really appreciate everyone's help.

PS ~ I really want a very clean respectable clean ride and already expect to pay a hefty price tag for it in the end.

Someone find the link about installing a FI system on a 12a. I know there kits out that are decent prices. I'm too lazy too look.

here's the link that i remember. i'm not sure if it's the same one error402 had alluded to, but this one is pretty nice, i think.
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...fuel+injection

i'm not really sure how this would work with a bridgeport, but i guess all you'd need to do is find some guys who've bridged an SE with their stock injection.

try running a search under "fuel injection" ... it yields some pretty nifty threads.

What kind of intake manifold should I consider when looking into efi on an engine operating in the higher rpm ranges? I would think the old ida's would be more suitable for this. Am I wrong on this? Should I be looking into the dcoe's instead?

Not to sound repetitive here, but if money is an object start with an SE - it comes with FI and a 13B engine, an extra 35 HP, and can be made to go faster with simple bolt-ons like a K&N air filter and Racing Beat exhaust.

Manntis, there's just something intriguing about the 12a to me. The more research I do the more I realize that not many people are doing things such as building a street driven bp 12a w/fi. In fact, I haven't found a single one (let me know if you know any). The only thing remotely close is a very clean turbo'd 12a with efi.

Alright, I can understand the allure of doing something that's rare, for the enjoyment of it...

I'm just concerned, especially when you begin with "I'm poor, but..."

Hehe, I am poor but I'm very patient and can wait as the money slowly comes in. I'll be graduating from college next fall so maybe the rents will help me out a bit on my project. If all goes well I'll find a nice sub $1000 project car by Christmas.

My favorites are..

"Hi. I am a NOOB...

I am 15, have NO Mechanical experience, I've never seen a rotary, I have 2 Dollars to my name, and I want to make this car run 12's.

How do I do that no money and in one weekend?"
