Sudden Clutch Problems '84 GS

Alright, I had my roommate start the car while I was loading stuff in the back. All I heard was a god awful, and obnoxiously loud, grinding. Now the clutch is very weird feeling, and I know it's bad. It has to go all the way to the floor to change gears, and it doesn't come out very far at all before the car starts moving. Feels like a couple inches at the most. It's still drivable, it just doesn't feel like I should be doing it. It also drove just fine only 30 minutes before this event. One problem I had prior to this happening though is shifting down from 4th to 3rd the gears would occasionally grind. No idea if that's part of the problem.

Please tell me there is just a spring that popped off or something simple like that. I really have no clue where to start, and I don't know what I'm looking for. The car is an '84 GS 12A N/A, and from the searches I tried I guess it's most likely a hydraulic clutch? So most likely my Master or Slave is shot? Is this easy to check? I couldn't find any guides on here.

P.S. If anyone is in the Portland area, and is willing to teach me how to repair this, I would be very thankful.

Watch out, the RXDoctor will bust you one if you ask a simple question that has been posted before. He expects everyong to have a manual and search these forums for hours trying to get an answer. I will link you to my post.

ITs not much help but I have a leaking clutch hose and IM going to try to replace it today. First I would check to see if there is fluid in the master and go from there.

You're most likely correct with it being the clutch hydraulics. I had to replace them in my 87 just last week. They give very little warning, then they're toast. Don't mess around with guessing. Replace both master and slave and it doesn't hurt to pick up the steel braided line to replace the old rubber one.

Thank you very much for your help, looked at the manual and realized there is fluid that needs checking. It was at the min, I added some, and well it worked. Still doesn't feel quiet the same, but it does feel like a clutch now. This sounds way too simple for a problem that was so sudden.

If you can't find the source of the leak, then the back side of the master is leaking inside the foot well. Pull the carpet back under the clutch pedal and check. If there's fluid, clean it up now with brake cleaner to prevent the floor from rusting.

No offense, but it could also be the way you drive it. If you rev it up like crazy and just mash the clutch in while reving you will have problems.

Check your hose near the slave, the thing on top of the trans, mine was leaking where the hose met the metal end piece on it.

I got mine changed out today, hopefully it will not leak again for awhile.

None taken, that was one of my concerns when I first got the car. I shift at 3k usually, and from what I understand I'm gentle with the clutch, but I really don't know. This is my first car and the only manual I drive.
