which brings me to a question about the transmissions (and differentials) do the gears/shafts just swim in the gear oil, or is there some sort of pump inside them to circulate the lubricant?
if there is no pump, then why would you attach a cooler to it if there is nothing to move it though the cooler?

An external electric pump is whats usually used to pump the fluid through the cooler/s.
