stupid question about oil
stupid question about oil
how do you know how much to put in exactly? like i know each bottle is like 1 quart and that i need 4 and a quarter or some where around there.but how exactly are you supposed to measure that out? or do you just wing it and figure its right?
The dipstick should have a "low mark" and a "high mark". If the oil is at the low mark, it takes about one quart to get to the high mark. Try not to overfill. I use a medium- sized funnel for adding oil.. less mess.
You have an '85 RX-7... is that a 12A engine or a 13B engine?
The 13B engine holds 6.1 quarts of oil, but only 4 quarts is needed for an oil change, because only 4 quarts drains out. The 12A engine holds 4.9 quarts, but only 2? 2.5?? (I don't know) quarts is needed for an oil change, because that's all that drains out.

Ok, Im gonna be rescuing yet another 83 GSL from the junk yard (the whole cars coming home with me
), and I'm gonna use it as the parts car. Im gonna be taking the engine out of it and trasplanting into the first one I got from the junk yard (my 83 GSL), and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to ATF it for a little while before I try and fire it up again, just for fun. Also when I put fresh oil in it, I was gonna put some MMO in. Sound good to you guys? The car im getting was supposedly running about a week ago until it was stolen, and then when it was abandon, they took out the distributor
? Before I buy it, they said I could bring down my dizzy and see if I can get her to fire though...Hopefully all goes well, I need an engine
.

Even with the dipstick line of a 12A is 4 1/2 quarts, that what I always use...
By the way, Rachel you get the motor in?
MMO=Marvel Mystery Oil
By the way there really arent any stupid 'smart' questions, only stupid question is one not asked...

NOT.
ask a real rotary mechanic before trusting them.
I am sure they would freak out if you told them we regularly pour ATF in our engines too.
True true, so is MMO good to add or not? Oh yea, since you brought up ATF, my car has 99k on it and runs fine, would it be a good idea to put ATF in my engine? Would that help to make it run even better, or is ATF just used to start a frozen rotary? Just wondering, always looking to make my car run better.

i always wing it,
but theres this thing within the gauge cluster called a oil pressure gauge,
well you get the picture,
throw in about 4.5,sometimes more oil drans out, sometimes less,
it all depends how thick it is.
and old it is,cold it is,how long you let it drain for, etc.
then run you car for about 1-2 minutes,
check dipstick again,
then i usally run for 5 more minutes if its cold,
check again
now when you drive watch your oil pressure gauge,
you know you are gettin correct readings because you just did an oil change,
remember the readings,
mostly idle and wide open throttle,
now you will know when your running low without having to look,
yes everyone dont forget if you dont change your oil on time you will run very low,
last oil change i had only 1.5 qts drain out of my engine!!!!
it was a good sign of me slackin
yes "magical", it's supposed to clean all the **** off cylinder walls etc. That's why I was told not to put it in older cars cause the amount of gunk is greater (obviously) and this will clog up stuff. I have no idea if that info is accurate. NAPA employees are not the people to talk to about rex's.
transam,
ATF is good to clean the carbon out of your rotary. You can use it anytime. I would recommend disconnecting your cats though.
Here is the lowdown on ATF:
www.mazspeed.com look under the Facts section: ATF
The reason it works so well is because it contains detergents. This is what cleans out the carbon. I assume that MMO also has these, but I do not know for sure. I am not that familiar with it. I always use ATF, it is much cheaper than MMO, and I know it works.

RX7 girl,
go to the mazspeed site and check the facts section under ATF. It is something you only do every great once in a while. Or if you have a possible apex seal problem.
It is a one shot process, not an oil additive.
