Strange noise

Have been working to get my 82' GS on the road. It has a wierd noise under load but only when its in gear it happens about 3500 RPM, the best way to describe it is that it sounds like a rod knock in a piston engine. AS soon as I let off it'll go away. What am I dealing with? IS this engine blown, its got about 150k on the clock.

No it doesn't, only time it did that was after it was started after two years.

Also, its really difficult to get out of reverse, Could it be something in the tranny/clutch.

Like I said, it sounds like a rod knock but only while in gear and with the clutch disengaged.

Check your driveshaft for any play, it may be your u-joints or something else with it. Get up under your car and grab the drivsahft and just try to shake it in all directions. there is going to be a little play but you should be able to tell if its too much.

My guess is that it's the front U-joint on your driveshaft that needs to be replaced. When the rears go out, you get a huge wheel-hop at speed that gets worse and worse the faster you drive. With the front U-joint going, you tend to get a lot of noise and vibration through the stick shift.

Have a look at that and see what kind of condition it's in. My only other guess is that you have a chipped tooth on a gear in the tranny, but then you'd only notice it in certain gears under acceleration. HTH,
