change the oil, recommend synthetic, (here we go again), reasoning is that synthetic does not contaminate as quickly as mineral base. Put up on 4 jack stands to release weight of vehicle from tires. If you dont, when you get back you will probably have flat spots. Change the brake fluid and coolant if they have not been done recently. Prefer that you drain fuel completley because even the best fuel stabilizers only are good for around 1yr tops. Leave windows slightly vented. If being stored in a garage, disconnect battery and put on automatic battery charger to keep charged. Other than that keep your head low and your powder dry and come back in one piece. rx7doctor

First off, I would like to express my appreciation to you for the service of this country. Though it is not said quite often enough, we are all thankfull. Be careful, and God bless.
Now for your question. Since it's an '84, it should have a drain plug on the fuel tank. I would reccomend draining the gas from the tank. I've also heard that a car should have fresh oil before storage, and it should be changed again before starting it for the first time. Go ahead and flush the antifreeze as well, to limit the corrosion from sitting for so long. A little MMO in the spark plug holes won't hurt either.

I would honestly suggest to have someone take care of it every 6 months. Use stabil in the gas tank, and keep it filled, dont drain it unless you wanna replace it. Just have them change it about every 6 months and have them drive it lightly. Also cover the tires if you park on cement, because cement WILL dryrot tires, even if new. Having someone you trust/love (family member would be good) doing this every so often will keep the car fresh, and keep it from breaking down internally ( gaskets..... uh.. ) . You can flush the radiator and put a good antifreeze in it. I'd recomend like dexkool(red crap) pre-mixed being it has water without the junk in it. Hope this helped you, and I suport you all the way as you go off from our free land.
