stock speaker size
Are you sure that's not 6 1/2" in the rear and 4 1/2" in the kick panels?
It'll likely depend on mounting system for the brand you get - some "right-sized" speakers won't mount with the holes if you get off brands.

I'm looking into (no promises here at all) of finding a local place to mold some doorpanels with a proper spot for a 6x9. Obviously when I pursue it I'll be trying to sell them on their ability to sell more than one pair so that my price is low, and I'll post here when I get more info.
Man, I have far too many ideas for 1st gens compared to the time I actually have...

a 6" in the door panel would be plenty. a 6x9 is overkill for a car this small. 6" mids on the bottom of the door with 1" tweeters on the top and 6" coaxles in teh back would be fine. Hide a sub or two somewhere and there ya go.
i have not looking to it yet but does a 6.5" fit in the front? I figure it is 6.5" in the rear. What do u guys think is a nice set? Alpine, Polk, Pioneer (4 way). What do u guys have as far as speakers.
Infinity Perfect 5.3 Components up front
Infinity Perfect 6.3 Components in the rear
Infinity Perfect 12.3 sub
Infinity Beta Digital 5-channel (200x4 + 400x1) amp
I'm happy with how it sounded in my old car... can't wait to install it in my RX7 to replace this...

The point is to have some kickass sound! But you gotta do it right. Chef, that is NOT an example of doing it right. Try this:

It's just 3/4in MDF and I saved one of the storage bins. This was my first attempt at it so I have cheap MTX 10" subs in there. They are powered by

that 600watt amp that is tucked away out of sight under the driver's seat. If you look out back you will see

some 6x9 in the boxes while the stock holes are filled with 6in (or 61/2 can't remember) mids powered by the 200watt amp you see in the middle. Overall, I have not wasted much of the limited cargo space and it looks pretty clean.

The carpeting is just speaker box fabric. It's cheap and comes off the roll so you can cut to any shape you want. Because I removed the bottom of the storage bin, I have access to all the room under the sub panel. There is alot of room in there and I can easily add more wattage and nobody would see it. There is also the space under the passenger seat that is not being used at the moment. I'm saving that for an amp to power the front speakers. Right now I only have Pioneer mids in the factory door locations but I will be adding some tweeters for more front fill. With all that power coming from the back it's really not balanced, but this was my prototype. I'm still working on it.

ok, i love thumping sound as much as anyone else, but clarity is just as important. Having numerous large subs like that just makes a bunch of useless noise and vibrates the interior apart. I have 1 10" sitting in the back and tahts plenty. I plan on hiding it somewhere someday, but i wouldn't want anything more than that.
I got mine from a shop that sells car audio components. Most any shop that does installations should have a few rolls of the stuff.
I agree with 82TransAm, keep it simple and use quality components to give you good sound, not just volume. Since this is my first attempt, a test if you will, I did not go out and purchase expensive stuff. I don't even have a proper enclosure for those subs to maximise the bass. When I get everything sorted out, I will get quality amps and speakers and make sure my enclosures are built properly. The trick is to do it so that the car doesn't look like it has a killer sound system and that is the hard part. Anybody can build a kickass box and put a dozen speakers in it and pump 1000 watts to the whole thing but will it sound good? Maybe you get lucky. Will it look sharp? Not a chance! In my ride, the sound system has to be a sleeper just like the motor!

Would it be a good idea to forget the stockers in the kickpanels and put in 6's in the doors instead, leaving the back ones as they are? What door speakers would be best to get?

Hehe, thanks REV, but did you actually LOOK at that interior? There has to be seven different shades of tan because of the sun fading! Maybe I'll have to start hogging all the black interior pieces!LOL.

That's just WRONG! The black pieces are mine, damnit! And, just to show you up, gonna start working on the interior this weekend. Stereo's got to wait, tho, or I'm gonna run out of money. Unless, of course, you've got some extra amps & speakers laying around that you want to donate to the cause...
For whats its worth, I'm currently using the stock enclosures including those itty bitty 4's in the front. In my first FB, I had 5.25's mounted in the doors with 6.5's in the rear locations (Polk's all around). I like the 4's down low better than the doors - I'm getting a lot better imaging in front even with 4" speakers off setting the 6.5 rear pair. From what I've been told, its better to move the front speakers as far way from the driver as possible (imaging) as per the stock set up - with the 5.25 in the doors, I found the speaker closest to me was drowning out the other side plus your messing up your door panels. I know a lot of guys go with door locations but I've tried both and prefer the stock location (IMO). My new speakers are Infinity Kappa's and they blow away the Polks - very clean and handle lots of power (I'm running an alpine amp V12 60w x 4 rms). By the way, those focals are outstanding component speakers - best highs I've ever heard in a car speaker but they are major $$$$'s. And subs???? who needs 'em (no offense rappers)!! A good speaker and a clean amp will give you plenty of solid mid base and your windows won't rattle (unless, of course, you want your windows to rattle) - anyway, 2 cents.....
