I installed a RB header/presilencer in place of the stock thermal reactor and retained the stock muffler for a year. The sound was fairly annoying and the muffler began to come apart inside. I believe the stronger exhaust pulsations that are a result of the collected header tore apart the muffler's baffles. That shouldn't happen if you are just replacing the cats with a straight pipe, but the sound quality will be poor. Without a decent muffler, rotarys with straight pipes sound somewhat like a weedwhacker coupled with an Evinrude outboard motor.

Was your muffler new or 20 years old? The baffles in the stock muffler are pretty tough. I seriously doubt a header and cat elimination would hurt them. I've got a new factory muffler from victoria british and I'm sure it will last for many years.
i just replaced my stock header with a Pacesetter one. I am striaight piping the whole thing then putting a high flow aftermarket exhaust on it.
i hope it sounds good. i love the rotary sound
