Stock clutch

Hey folks,

I tried searching using "clutch" and got cross-eyed trying to find an answer without success. Can someone please tell me how much torque/hp a stock 12a clutch assembly will take? The motor in question made 186hp/138ft-lbs on the bench. Thanks in advance!

Kent

215 or 225mm? If you have the 225mm, isn't that the same one that Turbo II's use? If so, I would think that it would more than handle it...also, the clutch will last alot longer if you don't do 7k launches. I would imagine even if for some reason the clutch is at its limits, as long as you aren't powershifting and hard launching it all the time, it will do jsut fine

TII's use a different clutch, flywheel and pressure plate, all 240 mm. Your #s are a little better than a stock S5, I would go with a Stage 2/3 disc and pp or you can go with a $300 ceramic one like I have, feel is close to stock with a little more pedal effort.

If you plan on tracking the car, or drag racing, you might consider a brass button/puck style disc. Won't be a lot of fun in stop and go city driving though, especially if you bridgeposrted it and lost your low end torque.

You 1st gen guys are the best! 215mm, street port, and just street driving. Once I have the funds, the motor is going into my 67 Datsun Roadster.

Now that's a sweet swap, nice choice. You can go to a 225 mm clutch if you go with a lightweight flywheel and the correct counterweight for you engine. That will give you more choices for the clutch and pp.

Btw, you must post pics when you get it done.

This one's a 1600. I've had it 5 yrs now and have wanted a rotary Roadster since 1990(yes I'm old!) when I saw one in the back of a shop that was working on my girlfriend's RX at the time. I had picked up an 85 12a motor 2 years ago for it but sold it to a local guy who races in the spec 7 class. I picked up some pretty cool parts for the old pushrod motor but when I was given a quote of $1200 to re-build the head(no porting) and saw a Paul Yaw built motor with a IDA on it (10 hrs on the motor) for $1300, the choice was easy. The guy I got it from went to a Yaw peripheral port for his super production race car. I'm hoping the swap will be done before the end of the year. The guy who will do it is the same guy I sold my other 12a to but it has to be after the racing season is over(he rebuilds over 120 spec Miata trannys every season, fabricates roll cages, does trackside support in addition to his own racing effort!). I'll definitely post some pics once it's done!

Not yet. The kid's retainers took a big chunk of swap $$$ out of my stash. I was actually on my way to shoot the crap with the guy who will(?) perform the swap for me and got rear ended by a witch in a Lexus SUV week before last. I was out of town for work this past week so I couldn't get it in for an estimate (2 shops that I contacted said that they wouldn't work on the car-too difficult to get parts). I don't know if the frame is bent or if it will be written off. If not, hopefully, I'm thinking after tax returns. In the mean time, I go into the garage on the weekends, turn the motor over, and listen to the whooshes!
