Stock '82-GS 12A clicking/ticking noise
Engine compartment has clicking/ticking noise. Noise rate is faster when rpm goes up. Noise is NOT from engine itself. No leak in exhaust system(checked from manifold to muffler). Two rotary mechanics couldn't diagnose it. Any help, much appreciated.

define clicking/ticking lol, and also you said it's definitely not from engine, so check around the shift boot see if the sound comes from around tranny it may be your pilot bearing, eventho it's more of a rattling sound. hence why i asked to define clicking/ticking.

Could it be an arcing spark in the ignition system? Try taking a look in the dark, and you might be able to see the spark jumping.
Another possibility might be the distributor cap. Sometimes they get misaligned, and the rotor will snag on the pegs inside the cap.

ticking/clicking answers
-ticking/clicking sounds kind of like when as kid you clothes-pin baseball card in your bike wheel, only a little higher in sound freqency.
-pilot bearing ruled out, as recently replaced, so know what that sounds like.
-2 rotary mechanics(& me) listened w/ sound devices(all around engine & down carb. throats) & both concluded, not from engine itself.
-no sparking evident in dark from plugs, wires or distributor cap housing.
-rotor contacts & distributor cap contacts have been 'smoothed' out and no change in sound.

Were you able to figure out what this sound was? My 82 is doing the same thing. It sounds like it comes from right under the carb, or around the passenger side of the engine compartment. I would appreciate hearing what you figured out.
Thanks,

Shortly before my last motor coughed up an apex seal at 213,000 miles, it was making a pretty loud ticking noise. However, it would only do it when the secondaries opened.
You might also want to consider a bad bearing in the alternator. Or maybe a cracked air hose from the air pump if you still have it.
Other than that, I can't really add anything else to what has already been stated.

WATER pump!
I thought it was my turbo, so I sent it back out to get rebuilt. They looked at it and asked why I sent them a perfectly good turbo. Water pump bearings are starting to fail--in my experience.
