Still deciding on motor

Still deciding on motor

So im buying a 87 13b 6 port for $300. But with all the money i will put into it, i figure itll be about $1000.

I just saw on rotary shack, a 87/88 turbo motor for $1000.

The only reason i hesitate is because, with a turbo comes a lot more complications right? Is it expensive for the up-keep? The same reason i wouldn't be able to afford a beamer, everything costs a ton!


So im torn:
the rotaryshack motor:
*has the power i want
*not too expensive
*already assembled and ready to go

The 13b 6 port n/a
*needs a few things to switch over to my engine
*doesn't have turbo so less power
*will eventually cost me the same as ordering from rotary shack


i just want to know if a full time student with a part time job can afford caring for a turbo?

I dont remeber what you have to do to the 6 port from your last thread but most likley you will have to do the same with the TII. Most folloing is what you will have to do for either engine.

Front cover/Oil pan
modify omp
up gradded fuel pump
13b header/ 13bt Down pipe
For the TII make a cut out and get a TII scoop or make it into a front mount

And with the TII there is alot more things you will have to look out for and you will need to get some gauges to moniter everything Boost, Oil Pressure etc. These things are more crucial when you have a turbo. I hope that helps. I sure you really would rather go with the TII.

You can only pic 2 of the 3 following.... Cheap/Realible/Fast. So its up too you.

Yeah i know a bout the gauges and constant monitoring. No doubt the horse power and power in general is appealing, but spending upwards of $200 a month to keep the engine going.. i dunno.
maybe i should just go n/a with all the upgrades.....

My first TII swap was maintenence expensive because I replaced everything up front.....gaskets,seals,tuneup,hoses,belts,ect,ect ,ect.So that it wouldnt be a hassle later and because it was an unknown,used engine.
And it still blew a water seal 6 months later.Thats the gamble you make with a used engine,regardless of the warrantee or claims of the seller.You just plain dont know what the last owner did/didnt do to it.
And thats doubly so for a J-spec.You think those guys in Japan give a crap about tuneups and maintenence when they know that in 35K miles they will have to install another engine?

Nowadays,with my fully built S5 setup,there is almost no excess monthly costs or disadvantages,other than premium gas.Sparkplugs last 10K miles,K&N filter gets cleaned every 6 months,oil gets changed every 3K miles......what "turbo related" maintenence issues are you reffering too?
Reason most people grumble about TII engines is because they are in demand,so initial cost is higher,and they blow up more often due to old age,tom-foolery or just plain bad tuning.Its almost impossible to blow an N/A rotary from detonation or too many bolt on mods,which makes the TII engine look even more problematic.When taken care of and brought up to snuff,they are no more costly to run than a regular rotary,except fuel.The addictiveness and ease of power increase is when most people get into trouble...

Yeah. Just sounds like maybe i should wait a couple years before i get a turbo, so i can do ti right form the start. Cuz if i got it now, i would throw it in just like that and not be able to do a rebuild or anything for a while. Could end up to be a waste of money, so ill stick to the N/A with bolt ons.
