Sticky accelerator

Okay first off I have an 84 RX with no options, about 145,000 miles and with the exception of the MR2 Rad fan, everything under the hood is stock. As far as I know anyway.

Here is the deal. I have had the car about 3 months and I have noticed that the excellerator sticks on occasion. Usually when I am really getting on it or going up hill. The problem only happens on occassion, maybe 2 or 3 times in teh past three months and I only notice when I shift and the rpm's go through the roof. I figured the escellerator cables need to be changed, add that to the list.

I did clean up the carbg real good and even sprayed some WD40 on everything that moves on the carb to lube things up a bit. I was spraying Wd around the carb looking for a vacuum leak. I read that elsewhere on the forum. I was tracking another problem I thought I had.

This morning the same thing happened again only thins time instead of the accelerator just sticking, when I shifted from third to fourth, the car was accelerating by itself. I had my foot on the brake to keep me from driving into the back of the car in front of me. While pumping the brakes the accelerator released and I didn't have another problem for the 50 miles or so from there to my office.

Is there something else that could cause this problem? I noticed that there are spaceship looking things all over the place under the hood, with about 4 or so on the carb itself. From my research I see these things are there to help with cold starting, hot starting and other types of starting. Could one of these things cause my phantom acceleration? or is this a straight carb/cable problem?

Your throttle cable could need to be changed, or perhaps it's coming out of it's bracket and is getting stuck.

look at the firewall side of the carb, in there is all your linkages.....i guess hose them down with some lube and see what happens, it could be the cable as previously noted.

Thanks all, I will take a look after work. I know I want to change all the cables anyway, but I was hoping that could all wait until I upgrade the carb. Oh well, since it is my daily commuter, I will have to fix things as they come up.
