Sterling install questions
Sterling install questions
Well, I finally went and bought a sterling. Used, but in really nice shape; minus the fact that Canada Post / USPS dropped the CRAP out of the box, bending my throttle linkage and breaking the fuel pressure gauge. Oh well, what do you do.
I currently have a pump that puts out 7+/- psi going to a Holley 1-4 regulator running at 3.5 psi.
I have a few questions regarding the installation and hook up of the carb though.
The only vacuum lines I need are for the brake booster and vacuum advance for the timing, right?
For the intake manifold, I stripped it for the most part. Just waiting on the air control cover plate. In the mean time, I plugged the holes on the AC valve with two rubber stops. I also plugged a hole that was producing a ton of vacuum on the actual intake, towards the inside of the car.
Problem: I can't get my car to idle at all.
I turned the Idle Air Adjustment screw in, then out 1/4 turn like Sterlings site says.
I turned the Air Fuel adjustment screw out 1.5 turns out.
It starts up if you pump it and hold the throttle down, and gets AWESOME throttle response; it just wont idle.
Is there an idle stop?
I also noticed the choke lever is still attached. This remains not attached to anything right?
Thanks so much, and I'm sure I'll have a few more questions soon.

if you are having trouble setting the idle this might help
and yes the only vac lines you need are brake booster and dizzy vac advance. as for the choke, you can hook it up if you need it.
OK there is a way to adjust the idle screws if it wont idle. I usually have to hold the throttle open by hand, make an adjustment, then let go to see if it doesn't die.
1. don't worry about idle speed, just focus on the bottom mixture screw first - adjust it until the idle is stable. Depending on if the idle is too rich or too lean you may have to screw it either way.
2. Once the idle is stable, then adjust the speed with the top air screw. if its idling too high, screw the air screw in (clockwise) until the engine almost dies or you reach desired speed (mazda says 750rpm but i prefer around 900-1000rpm)
3. if the engine almost dies from step 2, screw the bottom fuel screw in to make the mixture leaner. if you havent reached the desired speed yet, repeat steps 2 and 3.
4. once you reach desired idle speed, set the final mixture by screwing the bottom screw in until the engine hunts, and then back it off a turn or so until it runs smooth.

Well I tried setting the idle like that but I couldn't get it to even idle at a high RPM. It would need throttle on at all times to stay running.
I did have it idling at 150 rpm somehow. But when I screwed the IAA / AFA nothing changed. Everything remained the same.
Ill give it another go asap.
