Stereo install questions

I was curious what wiring harness everyone was using for their stereo installs on the 1st gens. I can't find one anywhere near here. Any advice about where to get it, or how to rig it is welcome.

Best Buy shoud have the wiring harness you need. I can't remember the part number. Just give them the year make and model and they'll find it. A small mobile electronics shop wouldbe better though since they're more competent.

I just used a multi meeter to find the power wires I needed, and then ran New speaker wire to the new head bypassing the balance control between the seats, and the OE amps...

Some day I will try and firgure out the audio signal wiring...

That is the easyest, quickest and cheapest way to connect an aftermarket sterio

Good Luck,

A

Quickest and easiest way is to get the wiring harness. Almost everybody can spare $12. Just get the harness.

Never crimp anything. A year or 2 later you will have a short. Always solder connections.

I installed professionally for 13 years. I was a MECP 'master' installer. I crimped everything. If you have the proper tools and experience you wont have a problem. Only wires I solder are for alarms under the hood. Also solder wires for door trigger, hatch trigger, lights flash etc. Only reason I soldered was because I wasnt cutting the wire in 1/2 I was only taping into it.

If you want to crimp wires get a set of Snap On PWC-39's $40+ for a pair of crimpers there are the best out there. If you use those cheap *** flimsy $5 walmart crimpers and crimps you will have problems.

Yeah done it several times. You cut the plastic dash, and then you have to trim some of the metal behind it. You also have to remount the AC/climate controls up a little higher. Its a pretty easy install, but if you havent the experience take it somewhere. If you attempt it and screw up when you have to have someone 'fix it' They will charge you more to do the install and clean up your mess. I know I did, Id charge $20 or so extra for my extra time pulling out what the customer did. Not to mention if you cut the panel and the metal wrong, you will have a mess that no one can use.

Best Buy carries the install kit with dash adapter and wiring harness. I think it was about $30 for everything.

DIN... I'm not sure the correct term, however what it is, is aftermarket slim cd player style radios. You can also get a double DIN which most of the time comes in cd player and casett

YOur new headunit probably has more power then the stock Clarion ones did 20 years ago. If you need more power, you need an amp (unless you upgrade to more effeciant speakers all around). Nothing special, a good 40x4 qamp would be nice.

Your OE amps probably have less power than your new head unit, they are just dead weight, remove them and same a few pounds

Right on Mike!
I've never had a problem with my crimp connectors either.

Hell, half the stock connectors on the FB's were crimped...

Well, not quite a "few" pounds for the amps...
As I recall the ENTIRE stock system (complete 3 piece stereo, speakers, amps, wiring and joystick came out to ~6lbs...
