Question steering wheel cover for 1st Gen

Sometimes I feel like I'm driving a truck with this large skinny steering wheel. Perhaps if I wrap it in leather it will feel more sporting. Does anyone had any experience with leather steering wheel covers? Any recommends on a brand that works well? TIA

I know of one. Wheelskins. They are kinda pricey though. You just need to know the diameter of the wheel, circumference of the rim piece you hold, and color you want. it's at http://www.wheelskins.com/

or you can do it the old fashion way, and grap a reall long stip of leather (two inches wide maybe) and wrap it around the entire thing.

I can relate to the stock steering wheel. It seems almost bus-sized. I replaced mine with a wooden one from Mazda that I found in a junkyard. It has a nice feel to it. Wheelskins look pretty cool also, if you wanted to keep your existing steering wheel.

No one will let you race with a wood wheel though...

My -SE came with a nice leather cover on it. As far as I can tell it was put on by the original owner and kept on ever since, as the original leather of the wheel underneath is MINT.
Anyway, it's a weird sort of woven/braided cover that laces up. Not really a lot to look at, but provides EXCELLENT grip.

Still feels like a bus wheel tho.

I still need to replace it with somthing a little sportier.

My 76' Cosmo had a real nice wooden steering wheel. I'd replace my wheel with one of those in a heart beat.

What kind of car did you find the wooden wheel on?

And how big is it?

I have a Grant GT racing wheel in my 85 GSL thats Mahogany and alluminum. Its pretty sweet . By the way, It came with the car, theres no way I would pay that much for a steering wheel .

~T.J.

PS - Matches the interior fairly well too. The pic doesnt do it justice, it makes the wheel look too bright with the flash, in real life its a nice match .

Hey smnc, he got the wheel off of a SA that was in our local junkyard. It's a Mazda piece (says Mazda on the horn button) The actual wheel part is wood (looks like mahogany (sp?)) and the spokes are polished (sort of) metal. The metal spokes are mostly covered by a plastic peice that is also used as the horn button, almost like a "rim blow" wheel. It's a real nice piece, wish I had grabbed it before him, but oh well. I'm sure a little searching will land you one. Later

yea, it really is a sweet piece. Gives the rx7 that real sports car look, like an old MG or triumph or something like that.

I was just looking over my previous comment, come to think of it, it's not a "rim blow" style wheel. The horn button is a seperate piece surrounded by the larger piece that covers the metal. Sorry
