Exclamation steering problem potentially hazardous...please help

My steering wheel for my 1985 GSL-SE is very loose (as in im free turning it for a bit before it actually turns)...i can swing it side to side without turning...i have no power steering and im wondering if that will help? or is something like my rack and pinion messed up? is there a way to fix this problem or am i going to have to buy something expensive? if so, what do i need to buy? also, how much do power steering systems sell for?

You need to inspect the complete front end for wear first.

If none of the components are worn out then adjust the steering box per the FSM and see if that helps.

You do not have a rack and pinion system.

As far as the other questions about is it expensive or what do I have to replace, see my first statement.

By front end he is talking about ball joints, wheel bearings, inner and outer tie rid ends, pitman arm, and idler arm.

Use the search function, or just look through some pages for other's asking this same question. There is plenty of information right here at your fingertips. I'd give you the link to the best one, but I'm at the wrong computer for that (don't have it here).

Okay, found it for you. Read this entire thread, especially the parts about inspecting and replacing the steering parts in the front end. Raise the hood, and have somebody turn the steering wheel while you look around and get yourself familiar with all of the moving parts. While doing that, watch for anything that's loose. Do ALL of this stuff before you try to adjust the steering box itself. That is absolutely the last step in correcting the loose steering...
