Stealth sub enclosures?

Alright, I got my CD player installed yesterday (A Kenwood KDC-319 for those wondering) and it's wonderful ot be able to crank the tunes and cruise again. However, bass is rather lacking. Well, a LOT lacking, actually. I'd love to add a set of subs to the car, as everything was already wired before I bought the car. However, I don't feel like having a huge speaker box lying in the hatch. I've seen before on here somewhere, a guy had fiberglass enclosures that hid in front of the taillights and was covered by the carpet that hangs down. I believe each one held a single 8". My question, is there anyone out there that has a set of these they'd be willing to part with. If not, perhaps we could get somebody to start fabricating and selling them. (Hey Manntis, want another project? He He) Anyone?

Well if your good with wood you could do somthing similar to mine... Its a 12" sub, which when not in use is covered with a carpet that goes over the entire hatch area, so basically a second carpet.

Check out my web site to see a pic of my box

I took out my storage boxes to make a sub box, but there was quite a bit of contraversy over why not to do that. I chose to do it for my own reasons (simplicity mostly), but I am in the process of redesigning the whole box again, especially after seeing another forum members setup. Also, when I re-do the box, it will be 3/4 MDF, not 3/4 plywood like I did last time (only did that cause it was cheaper, and I had NO money). Anyway, check out the link for the WHOLE story (its kinda long), or just check out the pics .

Direct,

Yes, those are what I want. I've seen Max7's shots before... now where can I get them? I've never done anything with fiberglass before, so I'm somewhat hesitant to just jump in and try it myself..

Dammit, I was happy without subs... now I'm gonna hafta make a set of those nicely rear mounted ones.

Okay stereo wizards, would a fibreglass back/MDF front enclosure work? I'm picturing a two piece (when finished) sub woofer addition that would nestle just ahead of the rear light clusters and create a 'bulkhead' of MDF just behind the carpet, that would then be bracketmounted or directly screwed into the sides and parcel shelf floorpan.

Main thing I'd need is a buck to shape the complex mould for the rear fibreglass pieces.

Anyone tried some JL 6w0's in the stock rear speaker location of a GSL-SE? Looks like with a small piece of MDf epoxied over 1 or 2 small holes and you could have a pre built enclosure.

Yep, it's a common method. Fibreglass because you can get the odd shapes often required to mount in car interiors while using all the available space, and MDF because you want a very rigid baffle to mount the driver into.

Sounds good.

I'm planning to start a sub install sometime early in the new year. It will use fibreglass, and MDF. It'll also be the first time I've ever used fibreglass, so it should be fun.

Edit: The most important thing is to make the enclosure airtight. Also, sound deaden the f/glass when you're done to reduce it's resonant frequency. It's a bit of a compromise, because the f/glass certainly isn't as solid and dead sounding as MDF but is good for weird shapes. So anything you can do to solid up the f/glass is a good thing.

Did that make sense?

I used to have a sub in the back of my RX, a similar setup to what everyone else has been talking about the bench type enclosure running the width of the boot. But that was until some mongrel decided that it would look better in their car or in the window of some hock shop, and broke into the car and stole it.

So after a trip to Hong Kong and a rockford fosgate 10" later, i was stuck with the decision of how to place it so it wouldn't get stolen. So i did a little research and decided on removing the spare wheel and using this space for the sub enclosure. Luckly the size of the space was pretty much spot on for the size required for the sub. So i lined the spare tyre space in fibre glass and built it up about 2mm-2.5mm thick or so and placed a piece of 16mm MDF on top to the speaker to sit on. Once this was all air tight and sanded and painted black it sits about 20-25mm above the height of the rest of the boot, but pull the carpet over and all you see is what looks to be the spare. The amp is under the drivers seat.

Then you can either put the spare on top of this and hold it in place using the luggage straps or what i do is carry a can of gel tyre inflator in a can.

If you want some pics of what it looks like email me.

Direct,

With those pics that you have posted, what happens when you need to replace a light bulb??? especially for the number plate lights on the 1978-1980 series one rx7's?

Danny, don't be afraid of fibre glass! i did it for the first time on the enclosure i made, and because it is out of sight it doesn't really matter. the main thing is to make it air tight, so use a fair bit of resin. Oh yeah, it does stick as well.

You got me. I have no idea. It's not mine. I am sure they can be pulled out.

Line it with plastic first. Like a painter's tarp.

I've looked at it a bit more, and have come up with some ideas... my dad says something like this would be a piece of cake to do, the hardest part would be creating the mold. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve to getting that. If my ideas work out, I may actually be able to crank out a couple of sets for these for others. Who knows, I may actually be able to contribute something meaningful to the first-gen community.. LOL

i pulled out my boxes and have the plywood and glass
i like the idea of putting 2 15s in the storage area but there are holes in the frame you have to plug if you put subs in also you have to figure out what the cubed space will be for the boxes, so after all my thinking im going with 2 12s and falsie seats in the back

I was looking, poking, checking a bit more this evening.. how many of you guys (who have them) would be willing to give up the rear washer fluid bag/bottle for a set of these? My car doesn't have a rear wiper or squirter, so I'm not involved in this part. My test mule is a GSL and I was just reminded about this option this evening. Let me know.. this project is actually moving forward for once... LOL

I'd pay good money for boxes like that... I'm gonna run my rear squirter out of the front resivour anyhow. Make em and I'll buy em.

I'm not sure on ported or selaed though... I listen to a wide variety of music, so I'd like an all around kinda setup... I've got a set of JL 8 inchers that I'm getting for a good deal, and I'll get whatever amp I need later...
