starved for fuel when accelerating from stop

Freshly rebuilt carb, just put the tank back up, it was filthy and so I dropped it and cleaned it out.

When I take off from idle, my car sounds like it wants to die (like its flooding out or starving, more like flooding though). I can recover by taking my foot off the gas and feathering it and then its fine.

What does this sound like? Too rich of a mixture or am I doing something wrong? I need to change the fuel filter on this beast, but aside from taking off from idle, it works perfectly so far.

Could be a bad accelerator pump or float level too high.

I've rebuilt 3-4 carbs in my lifetime, not a lot, but its not a complicated job imho.

Float level is fine both hanging and upside down measurements, and the accel pump seemed fine also.

I can start the car cold without using my choke, which leads me to believe its running rather rich, so, I'll check that out after I remove the fuel filter.
